A lot of people have asked for help in posting pictures in this forum.
I would like to know what any of you would like to see in an FAQ about this subject. Do you want detailed, by the number instructions ? Etc.
What do you think should be covered ? (File size, type, etc. Different ways to post, ie, just a link, or have the picture show, etc.)
Give me some ideas. The more this thing covers, the better. This is a good chance to ask those questions that you were too chicken to ask before. No question is a stupid question. If you are wondering, I guarantee, someone else is too.
If I do this, I may ask for help from some of you who are on Macintoshes, and who use browsers other than Netscape. I may also ask for help from people who are familiar with graphics programs I have never used. Anyone who has already helped others with anything at all on this subject, and who would like to add their two cents please drop in here and post whatever help you have to offer, or send it to me in an email. I want to say thanks to Novy, Nathan, Ralph and a few others who have helped out already. (Sorry I can’t remember all the names right now.)
Hmmmm, if I do this well enough, maybe I can convince a digital camera manufacturer to send me a digital camera for free just to experiment with the interface between the camera and this forum. LOL

Thanks for asking! Would your query also apply to viewing pics folks have posted? If so, for example, I can't get Michael's pic to d/l no matter how many viewers I u/l (CT: < < Obsolete Link > Michael P. "Question for Mulch52..." 3/1/01 8:01pm>). Admittedly, I haven't tried accessing the site/post via IE, which, in the past, has remedied the viewing situation that is otherwise impossible using NS.
Thanks for your generosity on this vexing issue :) Sorry, I'm no help in donating a dig cam--I have one my high-techno g/f couldn't get to work, and to this day have not uncovered it since :/
*LOL I wasn't asking for a digicam.b : )The post that you refer to has an .mpeg in it. It is a small movie. It is not a picture. Try RIGHT clicking on the link, (the blue letters), and choosing 'save as', from the menu you get. Save it to your computer and double click on it, I am betting that your computer will then open it up and play it for you. I'm glad you asked about this. It certainly has a place.

*Luke,I have no clue how to add picture links. If it anything like linking messages from other post discussions, I believe I could figger it out. Or if its like adding an attachment to an email, I could probably figger it out. If not, I need help.I haven't even been able to cut & paste text from one message to anotherSteven
*Luka, since I just saw my name in print (above) I should try to include something useful. Most programs we (collectively) use have a drop-down menu that allows labeling and/or saving scanned or otherwise acquired photos in a variety of formats. If you don't at least look at this menu when you file your photo you get the manufacturer's proprietary format, which in many cases, is completely incompatible with what everyone else has available on their system. My scanner, for instance, is a Visioneer PaperPort and will asign a file ending of .MAX to everything. But, using the drop-down menu I have a choice of the following:PaperPort Files [*.MAX], Self Viewing Files [*.EXE], Windows BitMap [*.BMP], PC Paintbrush [*.PCX], Multi-Page PCX [*.DCX], JPEG Image File [*.JPG], TIFF-Uncompressed [*.TIF], TIFF-Group 4 [*.TIF], TIFF-Class F [*.TIF], Multi-Page TIFF-Uncompressed [*.TIF], Multi-Page TIFF Group 4 [*.TIF], Multi-Page TIFF Class F [*.TIF], PDF Files [*.PDF], Portable Network Graphics [*.PNG], FlashPix [*.FXP]. Note that although the GIF [*.GIF] is a popular file extension, that's one I don't have where I have noted some others do.So, to make everything easy for both me and potential viewers, I choose to save everything as a JPEG [*.JPG] file because I think there would be very, very few systems that could not handle that extension. The program does all the work and I don't really have to know anything about the different file extensions, but, eventually, I will bone up because I understand they do have useful applications.Maybe someone else will post useful info about the various extensions, like when, where and why they are used. A very good ongoing topic for a FAQ type posting. Good start, Luka.

*i Maybe someone else will post useful info about the various extensions, like when, where and why they are used.I'll give it a shot :)PaperPort Files [*.MAX]Proprietary Paperport formatSelf Viewing Files [*.EXE]Fairly useless format, as most people can see the other file types.Windows BitMap [*.BMP]An old favorite. BMPs are universal, but very large. A TIF is usually a better choice.PC Paintbrush [*.PCX], Multi-Page PCX [*.DCX]The are older formats...not used too much anymore. JPEG Image File [*.JPG]A jpeg file is the most common for photo images that are posted to the internet. JPGs use 'lossy' compression, which means that when you save an image as a JPG, you loose some of the information in the photo. So, you never want to open a JPG and resave it as a JPG, as you are only compounding the lossy compression. Use JPGs only for photos. Don't use them for line art.TIFF-Uncompressed [*.TIF], TIFF-Group 4 [*.TIF], TIFF-Class F [*.TIF], Multi-Page TIFF-Uncompressed [*.TIF], Multi-Page TIFF Group 4 [*.TIF], Multi-Page TIFF Class F [*.TIF], You don't really need to worry about the different types of TIFFs. TIFFs are common when creating images for print. They compress using a LOSSLESS compression, which means no data is lost in compression. The multi-page TIF files are common in Fax software.PDF Files [*.PDF]A PDF is not an image format, but rather a universal file format (Portable Document Format). Usually used to save an entire document (ie, text and imagery) so that it can be viewed on other machines. When you create a PDF, the images within the PDF are compressed as TIFs or JPGs.Portable Network Graphics [*.PNG]A very robust file format that has yet to gain widespread support. When it is fully supported, it will have some powerful features including the ability to support multiple resolutions in one file. FlashPix [*.FXP]Proprietary.GIF [*.GIF]GIF is the other popular image format for the internet (the other being JPG). Gifs have to have 256 colors or less. They are typically used for line art.EPS (not listed)Some people may have this option on higher-end image editing programs. It stands for encapsulated postscript. This can either be a photographic or vector based file (or both). Typically used in the printing world. You need a postscript printer to properly print it.Some other tips:Resolution. When posting to the internet, resolution is irrelevant. Rather, the dimensions of your image, in pixels, is what matters. A typical small monitor is set to 640 x 480 pixels. So, if you want your image to fit on even smaller monitors, you want to keep it smaller than 640 x 480.There are two (predominant) color formats for your images as well: CMYK (refers to the four colors used to print images) and RGB (refers to the three colors used to project images on screen). When posting to the internet, your images need to be in RGB mode.

*Joseph:You explained that much better than I could! I meant to say that general computer users don't really need to save images in that format, as most people would just prefer to see JPGs, TIFs, or GIFs.
*I'm just a novice. But Luka, you have helped me in the past with this computer stuff and I appreceiate it............Thanks.I feel that my computer should have a crank on the front of it like an old Ford Model A. And I'm working a Pentium II with 64 megs of RAM.Just imagine 25 years from now. This will all be sooooooooo easy. It's kinda like car repairs. You finally learn what a torgue converter is when yours goes out. Until then.......who's got the time? The computer manufactures will someday make this complacent friendly.Ed.
*i Try RIGHT clicking on the link, (the blue letters), and choosing 'save as', from the menu you get.I only get a Save Link As [screen shot didn't come through]and those options are HTML or .txt files: [screen shot didn't come through]In any case, it didn’t open for me.Finally, you say you aren’t looking for a digicam—what am I misunderstanding about ". . . maybe I can convince a digital camera manufacturer to send me a digital camera . . . " ?Anyway, thanks for your help, as always!
*ROFLOLNaturaly, I wouldn't turn down a digicam from some company, but I wasn't seriously asking for one. I was joking. My joke was a poke at the practice by some manufacturers of offering their product for free to someone in a position to say something good or bad about their product. It certainly wasn't any sort of request, or even hint meant for anyone here, personaly.b : )The 'save link as' option is the one to choose. Click that one, make sure that it is being saved to a location where you will be able to easily find it. You should be able to change the name of the file as you are saving it. Make sure that whatever it is named, it has the extension '.mpeg'. Once it is saved on your computer, go find it and double click on it. It should open and run with no trouble.I hope this helps.
*i You should be able to change the name of the file as you are saving it.Thanks, I'll try that :)OK, it worked, sort of, maybe. I got the viewer, and just an image of the back view of a kid. It wasn't moving, and was blurry. Oh well. Probably not important. Appreciate all the knowledge-sharing you do :)
*Open it again and hit the play button. (the one with the ">" arrow on it.) That Mikey P. is one sick puppy.b : )
*Hmmm, I have hit every button on that window. At least (after signing off and trying again), now the kid walks for one second! LOL! What am I doing wrong? Maybe I don't want to know! Thanks, Luka :)
*If he walks for one second, then you probably only got part of the file when you saved it. Maybe you should try saving it again. Maybe you don't want to. The kid walks along the sidewalk there and a cat jumps out from behind the bush and attacks him. (I looked very carefuly for some proof that the cat was thrown, but it looks for all the world like the cat actualy jumped.)
*LukaI would love help posting photos I have ton's in Image Expert of my stuff I have tried over and over with no luck.Chris
*Do me a favor and write down what you have already done. The write down what you do when you try again. What kind of images are they ? (.jpg .bmp, etc...) What kind of computer are you on ?
*Thank you Luka and JoeSteven
*LOL Luka, thanks for the "visual" :)
