anybody ever use those precast concrete piers that you set right on the ground?? would they be ok to build a small 12×12 or so shed?

Even if it's a three story shed with stone veneer on the walls, a slate roof, and an 8-person hot tub?
sure thing, just needs more piers, and deeper.

Depends on the weather and soil conditions. Generally yes, for something that small. But with poor soil conditions you could experience some shifting over time.
I've seen plenty of sheds around here placed right on the ground. excavate an area slightly larger than your shed and fill it with 8 inches of process stone. frame on top of that using pressure treated lumber for the floor system
those outfits that deliver pre-built sheds just drop them on any kind of base you can throw together
I like the one with the adjustable post base, so if (and when) the ground settles it's easy to adjust the floor back to level.
