I have a question about the placement of the central air unit outside the house. Is it feasible to put it under a full height screened porch. This house would have a basement and the bump out for the porch would be concrete walls and floor with a floor drain and would have an outside door access to be used for storage of lawn furniture, lawn mower, etc. The floor of the porch would probably be tile, and the floor joists could be insulated for noise control. There would be a vent, probably louvered, right next to the air unit for air supply.
Would this be too noisy for comfortable enjoyment of the screened porch? Would this set-up be preferred due to the air unit being protected from the weather? Any other issues? Thanks for your help.

So the A/C unit would essentially be located within an enclosed space, is that right? Even with the louvers, this probably isn't a good idea. Those units throw off a ton of heat (no pun intended) and if there is no place for the hot air to go, a louver for make-up isn't going to do any good. Or I could have the whole set-up misunderstood. (A buildup of heat within the enclosed space will make the unit have to work that much harder. And the confined noise directly below might be annoying, although newer units are much quieter than the howling banshees we grew up with.)
Parting thought, there may be a reason why they are called the, 'outdoor unit', and adequate heat transfer is probably the key.
I never met a tool I didn't like.
I agree. Putting the unit on the shady side of the house, or with some type of shde, is ok, but in an enclosed room would stifle the air circulation and heat transfer. Around here we try to place them on a brick wall away from windows. Well, away from your own windows, never mind the neighbors.
Do it right, or do it twice.
