i’m confused. will the pls2e sold alone, by itself, function outside with the pls detecter i already have. or is the unit sold w/ the detecter somehow different?

I have the 2E (and its detector), and believe I also have a detector for another laser. Tomorrow I'll check it out and get back to you. I'd guess and say yes, but I'm not sure.

Sorry, but I have the 2E with a detector, which I couldn't get to work with my 5x. I don't have the detector that is sold with the 5x, though I would think that one should operate both. Now you've got me wondering...

I ordered the PLS2E from Costal Tool and it should be here tomorrow barring a last minute UPS driver strike. Before I placed the order I called PLS and asked if the detector for the PLS5x would work with the PLS2E and visa versa.
The answer was "no". They're different beasts. Laser line vs. laser point.
Now, the detector sold with the PLS2E "System" will work with the PLS360 which you can get alone or with that detector. The PLS2E/PLS360 detector can also be purchased separately if need be.
I have an old Agatec rotary laser that will only communicate with it's detector when it is in its laser point mode. No dice when it's set on the chalkline setting. But it is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation. - Herman Melville
Thanks. I guess I know what I'm buying at the JLC Live show in a few weeks.

I was the lucky winner of a PLS2E at Cal's Riverfest last summer.
Never owned a laser before and only played around with some others before winning it.
Got to say it is a wonderful tool. I love the self leveling feature, the line is good and clear inside (and acceptable outside if not over to long a distance) and the detector works very well. The audible tone on the detector is loud enough that I had to turn down the volume and I am half deaf.
If I was to need to purchase a new one I would definitly go with a PLS system, probably upgrade to the PLS5X.
