I have the PLS5x, which may be different, I'm not sure. When I use it outdoors in sunlight I have to shade the area where the dot is in order to see it. Once I do that I can mark it in pencil. Easy enough.... sometimes the hardest part is seeing where the dot it so you can walk over there and put some shade on it.
I have the pls5 ... no X.
what kinda application? I haven't used it outside yet ... I could try tomorrow ...
how far U looking to go?
I'll try to shoot the tree across the yard from my basement ..... looks to be about 40 ft ... I'll see how far I get ... think it's supposed to be fairly bright tomorrow.

I'm probably still high on laq fumes here...
I think I've seen some glasses that you can where to help see the beam though...
again, I may be way off base...
as a side note, you know the shield is back on right?

There's a laser receiver that reads the beam even if you can't see it.... longer distances, brighter conditions. If you have any dough left after you buy the laser you could buy that too. The main thing I like having is a tripod. One of my photo tripods could transferred to permanent jobsite duty.
No Cag,
you must be coming down off the lacquer, cause you are exactly right.
They are red lense glasses, that cause the laser dot to starburst, and make it pretty easy to see. Lot like the 3-d glasses for fireworks.View Image
It depends.
Mid-day, bright and sunny......forget it, no way.
Cloudy, overcast, first thing in the morn or late in the afternoon.......sure, and yes those red glasses help, but they aren't a perfect solution.
If you are looking to buy, then get the PLS5X. Same thing as the PLS5 but it has a pulsating laser (no, your eye can't detect this) so that the beams can be read by any laser detector. We bought the detector with it.
It is a great, high quality tool and I do recommend it.
I do wish you could see the dots on sunny days. It would be a timesaver, even with the detector.

Thank you for all your help. I think I will get the pls5x. I will mostly use it in framing
