Check out Mike Guertin's home office the FHB#123 Houses issue ....... might give you some ideas.
*I did a kitchen cabinet refaceing and countertop job once where the folks were on a tight budget . They put down new 1/4" underlayment [ plywood ] and drizzled three or four colors of paint in kind of a spider web pattern on the new plywood then covered it with a couple of coats of polyurethane . It was different but pretty cool looking , and very budget freindly . If you go with the paint and plan to live on it for awhile use porch & floor enamel it's very durable . Good luck , Chuck
*I once managed a theater that had stained plywood flooring in the area where refreshments were served. We got any where from 50 to 500 people a night, seven nights a week. I don't ever remember that floor being refinished in 20 years.
