I use 3" rips of 3/4" CDX around the perimeter of the cabinets, plus on top of all the joints between cabinets. Glue and screw them down well. Then use large panels of the same material over the strips, also glued and screwed. Now you have a firm substrate, plus 1-1/2" along the edge. Now a layer of cement backer board, or mudset, and you'll have your tile base plus 2" on the edge for tile.
