Point-of-Use Heaters

CCD9 | Posted in General Discussion on September 26, 2002 04:08am

I am thinking of installing an electric point-of-use water heater in my kitchen under the sink (see topic “BIG Plumbing Problem” under General Discussion) and would like to know the pros and cons from any of you who have one installed and also a ballpark figure on the brand and cost of the heater and installation costs.  It’s basically only for my use for cooking, etc., but I also want it to service the dishwasher for the few times I use it……and for when we sell this house.  I have been online looking at them, but the price range is so varied that I thought maybe this would be a good place to ask.  This is only the second question I have ever posted but I got such good feedback from the first that I think this is the way to go!  CCD9

This has been discussed to death here. Try searching the archives and see what you come up with.

On the way to work today, I ran over a bunny.
The good news is that it was a pink bunny with sunglasses and a big drum.

About 1/2 way down the page is a Ariston pou water heater.  We put in a kitchen remodel about 1 year ago (I know not a long track record), but love the no wait for hot water. As far as running a dishwasher, I think your biggest issue would be with the type/make of dishwasher several of them are low water (Asko uses less that 6 gallons for a full wash) there but many brands use lots and lots of water and no pou water heater would keep up.  A new washer and new pou water heater will set you back less than grand.  That said - I wish piffin would have elaborated on his poopooing of point of use water heaters.

I haven't seen this subject discussed to death here but I am new to this forum.  I thought the intent was for feedback so that I don't have to search the archives.  I want up-to-date info so that I can make a somewhat knowledgeable decision based on others' experience.  And why do plumbers hate point-of-use heaters?   CCD9

        Sorry if I sounded short.

        But picture this,

You are in school and the professor has just finished taking the class through a detailed explanation of his theory behind the _____. It is a two hour class and after the first hour, a student shows up late and proceeds to ask questions returning to the topic that was just covered minutes before. The whole class groans.

I realize you are not a regular but these two links took all of two minutes to find. Hope you find that they answer some of your questions.

Now that I'm relaxed and not working, I've got a little more time. In this area with hard water, the tankless will be corroded or packed with mineral buildup in less than two years. The occupants will be complaining of no hot water, precipitating agravating seervice calls from customers who don't want to hear the truth they have to be told. Changing the element on a regular tank is much cheaper than changing an entire tankless.

Some tankless turn into bombs when they get build up in just the wrong way.

I'm not a plumber- just repeating what I'm told. I use two different good plumbers. One can be dragged, kicking and screaming into installing a tankless. The other will refuse to install one, even if it means losing the job.Excellence is its own reward!

" I thought the intent was for feedback so that I don't have to search the archives."

If that were the case, then the regulars would have to discuss the same questions about once a week, in some cases. And we'd have the same old arguements with the same people over and over.

If you're coming here for free advice, I would expect you could expend a little effort to get it.

Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack?

The point of use water heater I was refering to is not tankless but rather has a small tank 2,4, or 6 gal. that is why I why I was sugguesting a low water use dishwasher.  I know about the ongoing discussion about tankless water heaters and I thought maybe there was some information about the small tanked point of use heaters that I was missing.

Piffin, I can relate to that.  Been in too many meetings where that happens.......

BossHog, I looked for the archives and didn't find them until today.  That was a real duhhhhhhh on my part.

ALL:  Thanks again for the options you presented me with.  I had some really great feedback.  If cost isn't too prohibitive we are going to go with Ralph's suggestion and go thru the floor, fixing the cold water pipe at the same time to hopefully preclude any future problems.  Then maybe I can get my new floor installed!  I like the sound of the tankless point-of-use water heater, so that would be my second option.

AGAIN THANKS TO EVERYONE!  This has been a learning curve for me and I have a better realization of what this site is about now.  Signing off - CCD9
