Polyurethane coat on painted stairs

In my rental property, there’s a short run of painted stairs (three treads). While re-painting the place, I sanded/filled the treads as smooth as I could get them, and then primed and painted them with the same acrylic paint I used for the trim, recognizing that it’s not durable.
I didn’t have any floor/stair paint, and it’s no big deal to re-paint them every once in a while. And no one should be wearing shoes while walking on them.
But I’m wondering if I could protect the treads by adding some coats of polyurethane.

Sure. I'd wait a week for the paint to fully cure, or cure more than it is.
