Howdy,
Newbie here with a question.
The builder Im working for wants me to go back on a house and put a little porch roof with a barrel vault in it. The house has been bricked up, drywalled, and is pretty much near ready to move in. For the porch, the total out from the building is 6’….with a total span of 8′. The problem Im having is trying to tell the builder that I need to set my two beams into the wall, which I would do by taking a few bricks out and cutting in a pocket.
His response was……”Tapcon a double hanger to the brick”…Now Im not the smartest guy in the world, but I feel there is no way that would be a good thing….the beam is 2×12, and gets wrapped with metal. The hanger would show no matter what.
I told him that I wouldnt do the job unless he let me cut in a pocket. The only posts on the porch are at the gable ends….away from the house.
Any advice?
many thanks I hope,
Chuck

chuck,
maybe you could tell him that you will put a post aginst the brick also with a couple of metal angle braces and see what he says. lol tapcon in brick/mortar supporting 2x12's.

Tyke.
I tried telling him a could put a post or even a half column against the brick and like you say, use some angle iron, but he says..."Ah ....hanger is cheaper and quicker." I just quietly laughed.

chuck... with a cut off wheel on your grinder , seems like you could have the pocket made by the time you di*ked around with the tapcon hanger.. and the efforts to disguise the fool thingMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Mike,
Thats what Im saying! I guess my problem is when to say to heck with what the builder wants, Ill build it the right way. Guess I just worry too much. Then too, Ive only been in business for myself since the begining of the year. Ive delt with alot of builders as an employed lead man in this area for the past 6 years, and have yet to meet one that cares about quality. They want em thrown up quick. Hell I was even critcized for setting 50' 10/12 Hip Trusses with vaulted cielings one by one with the crane. "That takes too long" The builder says. Its not that I cant take the critcism, (I have a great sense of humor....and a way with 4 letter words...) I just cant get over how strange some builders minds work ;)
Thanks,
Chuck
Welcome to the board. And stick to your guns - You're 100% right in this case.
I didn't work my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables.
Heya Boss Hog,
Where at in Illionois are you? Maybe you make some of our trusses?
Im in O Fallon, Belleville area.
Thanks for the welcome.
I built the porch today,......my way. Builder never stopped by. Just sat in his truck and watched. Entire project only took a few hours, so I guess he was happy.
Thanks for everyones help and encouragement.

I live in Carlinville, but work north of Litchfield. The company I work for is Rehkemper. I'm a truss designer, not a salesman. Most of the work I do is sold by our salesman, Dale V. (Don't wanna post his full name)What builder are you working for? If you don't want to post a name here, just send me an email through the message board. Just click on my username and you'll see a "send email" option.

you employee or sub?
We all know the right way to do the job.
You are asking more - how to handle him? Answer depends on your status.

Im a framing sub. Just got into the business after getting fed up for working for Contractors that never paid on time.
I dont want to lose the work I have with this builder, he likes my work, but damn he is a hard headed SOB. If I build it with his method, I fear my arse would be on the line if it came craching down.
Also, the builder and the Insepector seem to have a "friendly" relationship if you know what I mean. Sad to say, but inspector man never gets out of his truck.
