Good morning all.
shortly I will be rebuilding a proch deck on my long term ongoing renovation.
Regarding paint on exterior boards, I have seen two paths of regard. Some time ago I had read one should not paint all surfaces on a board as any moisture current or acquired has no pate to escape. Then I read “prime and paint both sides”.
A quandary for sure. I have seen the “paint all sides” avenue in action in the past on a picnic table that in a few short years self distructed.
Existing deck boards on the porch I am replacing had been painted one side. They were some sort of pine t&g, deck was probably constructed in the 20’s or so (maybe earlier according to a couple pictures I have), and in my memory (I’m 55) had not been repained.
I am replacing with hemlock that I milled and did the t&g.
Another note: the ground unger the deck was/is close (just under the joists). Actually pretty dry with a gravel/sand ground. Excelent drainage.
Oh, yeah, If the new deck lasts 20 years I really won’t care in those advanced years!
Cheers, Paul

The "no path to escape" argument is bogus -- if water can get in it can get out. But slowing down entry/exit helps moisture levels in the board equalize, reducing cupping and related issues.
