Hey Everbody,
Hope Thanksgiving was great for everyone.
My buddies and I finished the beam, 2×8’s either side of 4×4 with 1/2″ bolts through, the other day. The 4×4’s sit in pb44’s by simpson which are anchored in concrete. All this was spec’d by engineer, wish I went with 6×6’s anyway. For whatever reason, when we started to place joists on beam I noticed a definite slope towards house rather than away. Obviously a mistake made somewhere. Now I have to come up with a fix. I was thinking of removing the bolts flipping the 2×8’s getting the correct height and tacking in place. Drill new 1/2″ holes and rebolt. The holes, top vs bottom are offset, one on left of 4×4 and one right. By flipping 2×8 I have new wood to drill through in 4×4. Once correct slope is established, put in joists.
My question is weather a 3 1/2″ post is still sound with 4 1/2″ holes in it vs 2? It obviously happens when I butt joint 2×8’s, but I try to use the best length wood to avoid this too often. If it were 6×6’s I wouldn’t be asking this question.
Thanks
Kevin

You'd feel better about all this if you replaced the posts with 6x6s wouldn't you?

Yeah I would. Means cutting out the PB44's as flush with concrete as possible to allow an AB66 and not have it rock to much. Drilling holes for either wedge anchor bolts or epoxy bolts in, getting cold for that. The thing is time, my building under renovation insurance runs out 12/11/07. It was renewed once, a 3 month policy for about 700 bucks. They will not renew a third time and I would prefer the homeowners anyway, 1/2 as much. They will probably write a homeowners if framing passes, electric and plumbing already did. I have a deck on 4x4's that's 20 years old with no problems, still wish I went with 6x6's.
Thinking I'll try to fix it as my original post described and beef it up in the spring to 6x6's. No news from caveman?, I've been checking in as well.
You read my posts but don't answer, your like my guilty conscience :)Just checked out Simpson's web site, might be able to use Titen bolts, I'll call them tomorrow.

as I said before, good night. I wouldn't be up if my 1 1/2 yo wasn't giving us a hard time.
