I am going to build some screens for our porch and am not sure what wood to use.
I originally thought 5/4 pine. I read an article where someone made storms out of poplar – but I dont kow how well that would hold up in contact with the porch deck. Someone recommended spruce “sash stock” which no one here in Rochester seems to have. While looking for spruce I also had recommendations of mahogany (but we are out) and cedar. I am concerned about how well cedar would machine. my only experience with it is a table I made out of some downed small diameter trees.
Suggestions and comments appreciated. And we are committed to wood, none of this fancy metal or (gasp) plastic.

Redwood works well.....also, spanish cedar if you can get it.....
Last bunch I made were redwood...dadoed for the screen bead, grooved for rubber spline under that, mitred & biscuited with poly glue at the corners....
Piece o' cake
