The front of our house here in North Carolina faces southwest and the sun has completely destroyed the vinyl siding. Is this a normal thing or does vinyl just wear out quickly?
We’re looking for solutions to fix the problem. Should we go with vinyl again (if so, which brand?) or is it possible to tear it off and put on brick so that we don’t have to do this every 5 years.
Any ideas of cost — just a basic 2 story box house with front loading garage to do?

jbryer,
How old is the house? Is there another siding under the vinyl? or is the vinyl the original siding?
I have no experience with this:

but it
b might
be worth considering.

*You could try real wood siding.
*You're not going to stack brick up the side of the house unless you have a brick ledge on your foundation or you lay one up from the footer. Have seen some engineered steel that brick has been laid on, but don't think that's an option. There's stimulated brick applied like faux stone over wire on sheeting and grouted. Another possibility would be to research a thin brick panel that hangs off the sheeted studs. Might be called Nova Brick. I remember it being substantial and maybe 6" x 32" or something like that.
*jbryer, By "destroyed" do you mean faded or is there more to it than that? Is the existing vinyl a dark color?Mike S.
*calvin, you are correct. Nova brick is a product made by the same co. that makes allan block. It is interlocking and is attached directly to the sheathing (studs). This could be an option in your case, jbryer, because it does not require a foundation. the concept seems pretty simple, but I have not seen jobs in person.
*Thanks jamie, because like Orlo, there's alot of crap stuffed in this small head and sometimes it doesn't recall very easily. Keep waiting for the yard to tell me it's up somewhere, but I haven't asked lately. Would like to see it.
*It was medium blue that has faded really bad!The house was built in 1995.
*Any idea of the price of Nova Brick. That looks like a good solution.
*You'd better do your own price hunting. Call the local lumber yard or maybe even a brick house. That's what I'd have to do to get you a price. Just know it's available, do not know it's track record, styles, sq ft per pc, or price. Best investigate this yourself. Best of luck.
*Here's a link to another discussion on this- it might be of some help...http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/build/msg1000400524471.html?16
*Check with your local Historical Commission. They may have regulations against altering the historically correct "syntho" look to materials not contemporary with abutting and district standards.Oh -- sorry, 1995? Vinyl to Brick?Never mind.
*Good one! I don't think there's too many historical Ryan Homes!
*He said hysterical, not historical!
