Was out doing yard work and saw something hanging down from behind the aluminum siding. I originally thought it was an old cedar shake, but after pulling it out I discovered it was sheathing. Peering up behind the siding made my stomach churn. It appears water has been getting behind the siding for quite a while and the sheathing is rotted. I’m thinking next spring, I’ll have to tear off the siding, re-sheath, tyvek and the money-pit. What worries me is the exposed mudsill. Is it ok to just run the sheathing down to the mudsill and nail it off? I welcome advice anyone’s willing to give. Just don’t laugh too hard… I work in steel by day and overhaul my house as a necessity/hobby on nights/weekends.
thanks,
D.

Where's the water coming from? That ought to be the 1st place to start & something that should be addressed as quick as you have time for to help prevent further damage elsewhere.
Re: the sheathing below the midsill. As long as it's protected and not in contact with concrete it should be OK, but I wouldn't if it's going to require painting or in contact with the CC.
Looks like water has been running behind the gutter for quite a while nearest I can tell. I just bought the place 2 yrs ago, and this is another one of many "nuances" I've found in a 50's built ranch.

If it's falling out on it's own like that there is a good possibility there is more rot than just the sheathing.
Can you inspect the sill from inside the crawlspace or basement?
Definite correct the water intrusion culprit now instead of waiting for when you open up the siding.
Rez,
I'll take a look later on after work. I agree, after thinking about it and looking some more (outside) I probably have multiple problems that need attention sooner than later. More pics to follow.
Jer,
Good advice. I have a handle on the thinking and drinking part ;) It's the learning by doing and going there which makes me nervous. Summer before last, I had to just about rebuild the garage as the windows had long since failed and took out the mud sill & several studs. Never did that kind of job solo before. Reading FHB, and lurking around on BT helped get it done.
thanks again,

Take off the siding and start posting pictures. I'm sure you will get all the advice you need on how to fix it.

Thanks. My photo software wouldn't let me resize them.

Think like a raindrop.
Go there.
Think like a carpenter.
Rip out, repair.
Rethink like a raindrop.
Make it not go there.
Think about dry house.
Drink a beer.
That's all.
