What’s the best/strongest way to install posts for railings on a set of freestanding brick steps? I’ve seen too many where the posts wobble or crack the brick. I’m rebuilding a short (4 tread) set going onto a porch. Owner is disabled it needs to be solid enough so you can really lean on it. Upper posts can get bolted into the porch framing, but lower ones have to be self-supporting. Steel pipe set all the way down into into the footer? Welded to the rebar? Maybe 12″ square brick posts ? That wouldn’t look great here, but it’s possible.
