   Hi Loy,

   No the wall will not have a tendency to buckle out but will have one to collapse if not underpinned properly during the excavation.

   This advise is being related to you on the strongest of recommendations. Get a professional to look at it first. An engineer familiar with your local soil conditions. You may need to have the existing foundation underpinned first before you proceed with the addition.

   Loy, Is your crawl space wall poured or block? What kind of condition is it in? If it is block I'll bet 2.5 dozen sugar cookies you can tear it out and build a decent new wall for less frustration and cost than building next to it. If it is poured and reinforced rent a skidloader with a hyrdaulic jack hammer attachment and blast the sucker out of there. p.s. take time to support the floor, probably with bell jacks and 6x6's etc. We doe this type of work all year round in eastern Nebraska and I have a strong personal distast for building next to old walls unless there is no other way.

   i am palnning to add a room addtion to my house, which is over a crawl space. I would like to put a basement foundation under the new portion, which means i would need to dig next to the old crawl space foundation and pour a full hight wall. I am wondering if i should worry about removing the earth next to the old wall, will that old wall have a tendancy to buckle outward since there is no pressure exurted against it? Will the new wall be enough to hold things in place? How should I fill the space between the new and old walls created by the old footing? or should I fill it. Thanks
