Has anybody figured out this one yet? I am a custom builder, we offer design services as well. When a new potential client wants help to choose tile, carpet, cultured stone, etc. before a contract is signed what do you do? It sometimes takes several days to a week of my time to take them around to the various showrooms so they can make choices. Once the contract is signed I can put a design fee into the wording. But if they want to have their choices made before they sign a contract even though there are ample provisions for allowances what is the best approach?

If they want my time, they pay for it!
I can't think of any reason that I'd schlep around town picking out tile...or anything, for that matter...with a "potential customer."
piffin nailed it. Sign them, get a deposit, then schlep.
