Hey guys,
I notice many, particular in the south, are using fiber cement lap siding, however up here in s’tchewan my company has been using on some projects CANEXEL or ABTco hardboard siding, (the newer generation of X-90). I have heard of some class action suits going on with this product, is this valid and what other alternatives do we have other than fiber cement for buildings that require low maintenance and to be somewhat vandal free (ie. vinyl is no good).

I missed out on the class action suit against ABTCO, the company that made the garbage that adorns my house. This stuff should be illegal-It is rotting in places all around the house, areas that have moisture situations by far the worst, but still I can tell you that this junk won't last whether it's installed right or not, whether you live in a wet climate or dry.
I'd post some pics but it's really too depressing.
Don't do it!
*When I first started out here in NC I actually stocked 8" Masonite smooth beaded siding becuase I repaired so much of it. There is a town called Cary that started booming in the 70's and 80's, they threw up houses as fast as possible and used 8" masonite on all of them, (still are actually) But get this, in addition to using a siding that I wouldn't use anywhere but the desert, a lot of these houses don't even have gutters! I've pulled the siding off of entire sides of houses that where less than 3 years old, the stuff is absoulte crap. I really don't know of any soultions other than hardie plank, (which I love by the way) I just wanted to rant.
*Try a Google.com search: ABTCO hardboard got a number of hits, the first was http://www.abtcoclaims.com/There have been a lot of problems with various composite wood sidings. It is a "delicate" product. Its degree of crappiness is difficult to determine, however, because it has rarely been correctly installed; [most] siding installers being incapable, apparently, of sophisticated acts like reading instructions.
*That stuff is awful....
*Bob,That's great. Kinda like saying (most) building inspectors are incapable, apparently, of sophisticated acts like finding an attic, or a crawlspace.
*Hey train driver, you have a word mis-spelled in your title. That should be a 'C', not an 'H'.
*good one Luka...
