Any ideas from drywallers how to keep dryed chunks out of premixed compound. Tired of skimming and throwing out the top layer everytime I re-open the bucket.

Wipe your bucket down each time with your 4 or 5" knife. And of course always put the lid on after each refill.
Ever tryed the bags?
If you mean in the boxes, then yes. I still put it in a 5 gallon bucket tho.
Do as ACI said and then add water on top of it..it will never dry.
put a layer of plastic on top of the mud after you clean the sides...

All of the above answers and clean the lid too.
blueJust because you can, doesn't mean you should!
Warning! Be cautious when taking any framing advice from me. There are some in here who think I'm a hackmeister...they might be right! Of course, they might be wrong too!
Ditto to all of the above and make sure the lid snaps on tightly all the way around.

does this mean you feel the same way about drywall mud as you do about painting?

Wish I could but Its not the texture I want.
Seems the better job I'm doing smoothing the final coat I start dragging one of those @#&& chunks across the work. Makes a big groove, and the fix-up never looks right.
Maybe I can put this in the same category as painting... My wife paints and does a very good job of it. MAYBE?? I can teach her to mud.
I am a sh*t poor DW finisher. But my friend that is a pro kept on me about keeping my pan clean and the bucket clean. At the end of the day take you blades and clean out the bucket the the best that you can. Then a scrub brush and clean down the walls. Then poor about an inch of water over top. You might want to go over it again with wet brush, but don't stir up the water. Then the next day pour off the top water and restir it.
