My 10-month reno is coming to a close with stucco going up next week. But after installing new doors and windows, and removing all the vinyl siding, I’ve got a fairly damaged insulbrick surface to prepare before the stucco sub gets here. I’m wondering if I just caulk everywhere, or squirt spray foam, or get serious with thinset (it works on the shower walls…). Any advise? I have pictures that I’ll try to upload, or can send. Thanks.

What did the stucco sub say when you told him about the insulbrick?
He said he'd level the surfaces with the styrofoam, so "don't worry." He didn't say anything about weather protecting the holes or openings around windows and doors. I'm not a pro, but I think I have to do something to seal up the walls... don't I?
He also said he'd go right over the insulbrick with the styrofoam, using glue and nails to attach it.
Keep us posted and post a pix a year from now, this sounds like the siding job from he77.
Ya, I've seen brochures of the technique I think he's mentioning. A spray-on deal if it's the same.
It was a flyer advertising for contractors to carry and work their process in a set geographic area.
Suppose to go over about any previous siding like that.
Never seen anything in person.
If you plan on keeping the house for a few years, I'd tear off the Insulbrick and do the job right. Flash all the doors & windows and any other wall penetrations. Two layers of at least #30 asphalt paper, weep screed, casing bead, expansion joints, expanded metal lath. I.e. - the whole 9 yards.
Might aught to look for a different stucco guy too. Why not use the traditional 3 coat stucco?? Lots of bad press out there about poorly done EIFS stucco wall systems and other 1 or 2 coat systems.

Don't know.
It would seem prudent to ask the opinion of the stucco sub. I take it he is an experienced pro?
I have noticed in years past that there is a certain lack of response to stucco subjects on Breaktime.
Hopefully some one with experience can join in here with opinions.
