First off I would like to say how much fun it has been lurking here for a while. The personalities and chracters of the regulars is fun. Like a nice breakfast diner. Hashbrowns, crispy with onions, decaf, and some chit chat.
I make my living as an arborist in the Twin Cities and collected a pile of sawlogs last fall. A friend has a circle saw mill and we spent a day making boards. One of the projects for the lumber is to fence my backyard. There were a few white and burr oak logs that will be the beginning of the fence. Since this wood is naturally decay resistant I am not concerned with any treatment. Unfortunatly, I don’t have enough oak to do the whole yard. I do have enough Colorado spruce logs to mill into lumber for finishing the fence. When I get more oak I will remove the spruce and replace with oak.
Any ideas about how long the spruce logs would last without paint or any other treatment? I want the oak to age naturally. I can imagine that the spruce will last a few, 2-5 years, without sever rot.
The fence will be similar to board on board with a board layed flat on top of the panels. This will act like a little awning.
