I think I saw them using prime trim for interior casing and base on one of
the TV shows recently. (say it ain’t so) Pretty soon we won’t be able to
work without a respirator on all the time, either that or portable dust
collection for all too

What is prime trim?
blue
*Blue, he had me wondering if he was referring to GP Prime, or "prime(d)" trim. With the reference to dust, I'm guessing the former.
*I had the same idea, but was there a question in the post somewhere?
*I see it often. The painter will want to prime the trim before we put it up. It saves him a lot of work. I don't really have a problem with it except that it gums up sand paper when you make up your joints. It also points out to everyone in the world where the joints are. I try to avoid it if possible.Ed. Williams
*Yes, I was refering to GP Prime trim. It is manufactured from wood fiber. It comes in 3/4 and5/4 thickness, and 4,6,8,10 and 12" widths. It was originally made for exterior use, and puts out a fine dust when cut, similar to mdf.
*..i haven't seen GP-prime trim used in interior work, but we have used and seen a lot of MDF moldingssome of the profiles are very cost saving, for instance the crowns and the speed base, and , since your running molding there isn't that much cuttin so the dust from the ((dirt board )))) isn't a big factor..it is already primed, it takes glue well, you have to be more careful with outside miters, but it loves paint,, and finishes well...consider it and do some price comparisons .. it is usually about the same as the FJ pine.. but i've had a lot of trouble in the past with the joints in FJ showing plain down the road..the mdf is very stable, the crown is a little harder to work with , solid blocking sometimes needed..as far as exterior.. the GP-prime trim is great....b but hey, whadda i know?
*I guess my reply is moot on this subject. I have not seen any MDF or "Prime" trim, nor do I care to.Ed. Williams
*hey ed. how wud u no if u saw it ?we're talkin about painted woodwork.......i no u do some MDO panels... what do they look like?MDF is good material... u been around long enough to remember how easy it was to get good clear stock for your moldings..well, its harder now.. and it's only going to get worse...so start thinking about how to use these different products where they will be most appropriate....mix and match......you'll get a better job...count on it..b but hey , whadda i know?
*Hey Mike,Your key word there is "woodwork".Not "saw dust compacted together with toxic glue work".Would you buy your wife a diamond wedding ring or a zircon? They look the same don't they?Ed. Williams
*ed. i bot her what she wanted 27 years ago... and it didn't have a diamond or a zircon in it.. just solid gold...now .. on the other hand , if you are doing painted trim... you'd be better off getting used to working with the best materials available, be it CAHVG,, or F-J primed trim , or MDF, each has its' place ..and you kind of ducked my reference to MDO plywood panels.. what about them?.. you do use MDO , don't you?b but hey, whadda i know?
*Mike,We did a whole house of cabints out of MDF. Caseworks, doors, shelves, the whole nine yards. The client saw these at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art, and thought they were the cats meow. Too bad for us. The dust probably took a few years off of all our lives. I'm not trying to avoid your question, I'm trying to avoid building with this cheap-ass excuse for lumber. These products may be the wave of the future, but I don't have to use them if I don't have to. No, I don't like the complete "MD" family. I will avoid it as much as possible. You like it? That's great. I don't. I don't care for coffee either. You want me to drink it just because you like it? Sorry Bubba.......ain't gonna happen.Ed. Williams
*ed... i'll bring some eclipse coffee syrup and a half-gallon of coffee ice-cream to pete's... this is Rhode Island... and coffee is probably the state drink..if u don't wanna use any of the man-made stuff.. thas OK..but u and i no that once japan gets back on her feet , we can kiss all the quality lumber goodbye.. so you're gonna see more of the MDF/MDO as time goes by..not less..and yur a lot younger than me.. so good luck to you....
*Mike,I'll pass on the coffee flavored stuff too. But thanks anyway. I'm gonna pass on the shindig too. I'm getting real anti-social in my old age. You're right about all the good lumber being used for export. Too bad. I guess the good stuff goes where the money is. I have customers that would pay big for quality, but the retailers can't get it. Too bad again.Ed. Williams
