Note: the combustible gas detectors are prone to false positives.
For example, they (or some of them) will react to fresh pipe dope, a negative if you're testing new joints on a gas line.

"My sincere view is that the commitment of our forces to this fight was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute these missions - or bury the results." - Retired Marine Lt. Gen. Gregory Newbold.

Y'know from the time I was a small boy I can remember my dad always did it that way and every time he would say "don't do it this way" while in the process of doing it that way.
My dad has since long passed and I was working with a older guy guy recently who did exactly the same thing, I mean exactly. It was like going back in time.
In reality, does everyone do it that way and tell everyone else not to? ;-)
PS: I go so far as to pay the $3 or whatever for the jar of soapy water. Why -- cause it's made for it and claims to be non-corrosive. My fear is . . . "well your honor, obviously the leak and subsequent explosion was caused when this man used ordinary soapy water instead of appropriate commercial leak detection fluid . . ." i.e., soapy water in a fancy jar.

Those battery operated butane lighters, bad thing is they only work once if you have a leak.
