My wife and I would like suggestions for the placement of recessed lighting in a 15′ x 27′ den area. The room does not have any lighting in the ceiling at the present time. We would like to install a ceiling fan with lights in the center of the living area but would also like to install several recessed lights throughout the room. We are presently undecided as to where the recessed lights should be placed, how far apart, how many should we have in the room, and any other concerns we should be aware of. Any help would be appreciated.

Whoa!
What does Jack say, Infomercial Time?
Kevin, your question is so open ended that it is dificult to answer.
We typically install IC Cans, and the homeowner slaps in 70 watt floods. In a room of your size, I would put in 3-4. BUT,
I would speak with the homeowner first. How much light do you want, do you want accent lighting on the walls, do you want antique lighting on walls (sconces), or drop lights over a corner table. Are any of them going to be on a dimmer? Where is the furniture going to be?
I must also voice and opinion of lighting in general. I hate Recessed IC Cans. They are ugly, usually too bright, the light is not warm and friendly, and a room lit by these ugly cans feels like a garage. I think better and warmer lighting is accomplished by table lamps (which can be installed into switched recepticals), antique or reproduction wall sconces, and quality conservative ceiling fixtures. I think recessed cans, if used at all, should be restricted to halogen cans, and used to accent art work on walls. Once the light is reflected, it just looks and feels better. So I personally hate cans, but install them weekly.
I would go to a good, high quality Electrical Supply store, one with a show room of lights and cans, and if can you must, select the type of can and number of cans you need for the room, the furniture, and your lifestyle, after consulation with them.
*My wife and I just installed 6 mini eyeballs in our living room. The room is 15 x 11 with a window in the south wall, a double window in the west wall, archway in the east wall. North wall is solid. 4 are on North End, 2 on South end. Lights wash walls with 40W incandescent "director" bulbs. All are on the same dimmer. I actually rubbercorded different cans with different bulbs before mounting them in the ceiling. The wall washing is great, walls are cream and burgundy. Incredibly warm feeling. Centered ceiling fan with no bulbs - didn't want the glare. I also wanted to install some mini downlights with floods - 4 centered around the fan for direct or task lighting, but wife shot them down. I love the cans, no glare, light eminates from above eye level. Too many table lamps can cause lots of glare.-Rob
