Is it OK to install vinyl windows with bottom unsupported over most of width? I have a 64″ wide 58″ tall milgard slider that is resting on 2x sill on one corner and sitting on a 1/2″ shim on other corner. I called milgard, they said needs support over entire bottom. What do you folks think. This is a retrofit application in old house where the bottom window opening is not level. I think lower 2x should be driven up and supported by sistered 2x over this gradual lift. Am I out to lunch?

Just installed a vinyl casement 2 days ago. Manufacturer said warranty would be void unless shimming was continuous (rather than spot shimming)
Your idea of raising the 2x underneath till nice and straight then sistering the cripples below sounds like a good plan.

Regardless of the warrantee issues (or in addition to them), vinyl windows move quite a bit with temperature changes and frame components want to sag in warm weather (leave a casement window wide open for a couple of days during warm weather and you'll have to "help it" to close and latch it).
It's always a good idea to give the frame full support along the bottom, especially one that is designed to open and close.
