Protector Plates on Studs for Wiring?
When are these metal plates required to protect wiring from drywall screws? Only if the stud has been notched for the wiring? Only if the wiring is within 1-1/4″ of edge of stud? or ???
Thanks,
E.

Basically, any place the cable does not have 1 1/4" clearance from the edge of the framing member. So . . .
Any place where the hole is too close to the edge and doesn't give clearance.
Over a notch unless the cable is secured in the back of the notch and it's got the required clearance.
Any place a cable has to go around any obstruction (like a pipe or another cable in the way) such that it doesn't have the 1 1/4" clearance.

Thank you very much, Phil.
As usual, the correct answer is also the logical one.
