OK so I’m getting ready to replace many window sills in a 1947 building, concrete walls/stone facing. The sills are 2 3/4″ thick, were originally pine, and are set rather tightly into the stone facing. Most have stood the test of time, but a dozen or so on the building have rotted (due mostly to lack of maintenance painting, caulking, etc…). there is an 8 degree slope to the tops of the sills to allow for drainage.
My first thought was to replace with PT, but I’m concerned about the crazy amount of warping and checking that often accompanies this. PT is cheap though, considering other options of 11/4 cedar. I don’t beleive if I put pine back in, that I’ll get the 50+ yers of service out of it considering modern pine vs old growth stuff.
Anybody have tips for selecting PT that won’t check/warp? am I crazy to try this to save a few bucks? Also would need to be primed/painted immediately (I’ve heard of waiting up to a year to let the PT acclimate first, but can’t do that here).
I can order “Spanish Cedar” from the local yard. Anyone have experience w/ this? Is this a “real” cedar, or a tropical wood with similar look but maybe not as rot resistant? Forgive me, I’m used to Red and White only. Could be time to expand my horizons….
Thanks.
