I have some time between projects right now to do some work around the house – time to finish some old projects. I sat down and wrote up a list, 10-12 items that need to be finished. At the top of the list I wrote “punch list”, just like it should say.
My DW saw the list and she asked what “punch list” meant. I told her what it means but I have no idea where it comes from. Anyone have an idea on where the term punch list comes from?

Well, according to Wikipedia:
"The phrase takes its name from the historical process of punching a hole in the margin of the document, next to one of the items on the list. This indicated that the work was completed for that particular construction task. Two copies of the list were punched at the same time to provide an identical record for the architect and contractor."

Don't know if that's the real genesis of the term, but it ought to start a good discussion.
You have to remember punchlists predate carbon paper, so it was one of the few viable methods of getting a copy or copies.
I also often wondered where the term came from. Much obliged.Do everything you do to the very best of your ability, or don't bother doing it at all.
what about the term furr down ?
Fir out? Never heard fir down, but I assume it means the same. It's the wood Douglas Fir, at least that's what I always thought.
I've heard the term "killing rats" used in place of "punch list". However when the homeowner lady heard we were going to "kill rats" at her new house being built, we had to spend quite a bit of counseling and hand holding to reassure her it was an idiomatic expression and she really did'nt have rats in her new house.
Yeah but I have had killing rats on my punch list.
