I found this pic on a German website. They said it was a 5mm drill bit
I guess thats the reason why you should keep your hand away from a drill bit!

When you're cutting holes for 5mm shelf clips, you're supposed to offset them so they don't meet in the middle. He's going to have to put another hole in about 1/2" down the thumb.
If hes following the correct system that would be 32mm down.
Ouch! That's worse than when I put a sewing machine needle through my thumb!
Yack! At least it wasn't a spade bit.
It could have been worse. He could have used a hole saw!!!Martin
I'm thinking this would be a somwhat lenghty process to drill through a thumb. it's not like a nail that was shot or something. was it a dare I wonder? was he out of it and his buddies did it? any idea how it happened?

I don't know how it happened, it didn't say on the website.Martin
If you were drilling something hard, like steel, with the opposite hand holding in a bad position, and using high pressure, it wouldn't take long to puncture a thumb if the bit slipped off. My very first day on a construction site, I saw a guy peel all the meat off his finger with a drill bit. Seems he got mad and went to throw the drill. Caught his finger by the flutes of the bit and skinned the finger like a squirrels tail.Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
It just goes to show you. We don't need no stinkin' Metric system if that's the kind of stuff that's going to happen.
