I’m planning a new bathroom for my home. My plumber would like to use 4†PVC for the waste line. Other than sound is there any reason I should insist on cast iron. The waste line will run about 30 feet from the bathroom, horizontally and then drop about 6 feet to the house trap.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Around here, cast iron is a relic of the past. Noise is the compelling reason for it.
Some run CI just for the drops to control noise and PVC for everything else. Hybrid approach.
The lifespan of both materials is impressive, but the extra material and labor costs for CI are prohibitive.
What's under the 30' of horizontal run. Living space that will be used daily or only occasionally. How often will the new bath be used? Is there room to install insulation around the PVC (if that's what you choose) to lessen somewhat the noise?
I have two baths , one above the other, in a portion of my house. Both plumbed with PVC. When someone flushes the upstairs toilet, the sound of the water heading out of the toilet and down the 7' (inside the wall) sounds like it's right next to you. LOUD! Not that you can't talk above that sound, but howmany times do you bring someone else into the bath with you.
Check out the cost of both (CI vs PVC with lots of inculation) and then decide how much you want to pay for lesser noise.
I think they have 10' sections of CI, so that's only 2 joints in the run plus one at each end for the 45, and maybe two more joints on the final downspout to the stack. Really, how much more can that be in labor - a couple of hours?
Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the info. As I suspected sound seems to be the issue. To answer your questions. The waste line will travel on the ceiling of the downstairs playroom. This is not a basement. My plan is to build a chase and put sound insulation in it. Regarding cost...this addition is burning a hole in my pocket. But I'm trying to get it done correctly. Thanks,Jay
I'm only a homeowner who keeps his fingers wet with plumbing. Fortunately, precious little else gets wet because of my plumbing.
So I am not an expert, but make sure you have a sufficient slope in that 30 foot horizontal run to insure that everything you don't want washes away. There's only one thing I can think of that would be worse than a noisy waste pipie.
Don't know what the slope is in your jurisdiction. Best check with someone who knows.
Good luck.
