I have an old 3 1/2 ton heat pump that is near a small to medium size tree. The tree got blasted in one of the past near miss hurricanes and I know that if we have a true big storm it may fall on the heat pump.
The heat pump needs replacement (will be expensive as they all are now) –
Have any of you put a homemade cage or bar of any kind over the heat pump to protect it?

I suppose removing the tree is not a option? If it can heat your heat pump what keeps if from hitting the house?
wife against cutting the tree - a big holly. Its close to the house, and would probably just lay on the house, but if it fell on the heat pump would damage it
If you do happen to lose that tree, be aware, Holly is prized by some woodworkers. It is the whitest of white wood, and period furniture reproducers covet it for inlay. Don't go lopping it up for stove wood. An ad here or Knots or Craigs list may turn it into a pile of cash.
I just scored some that was lopped short, but even at 18" long by 12" (yup, 12") diam. It will yield some usable wood. I just had to be there to save it from the chipper...free.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
