I bought a house with oak floors. Someone in past refinished them and in places, you can scratch off top layer of finish, then they applied paste wax. Now floors are dull and ugly. I have big dogs. Was thinking of Bona Traffic for top coat, but do not want to sand down into stain, only remove old poly and wax ( i assume i need to do that). Does anyone have suggestions?

You might try an floor machine with a polishingbuffing pad (maybe a red or blue?). I don't know about getting a new finish to adhere to that wax however without getting it all off? Might have to use a liquid stipper? That would be messy though...might be better to just sand them?
I've only ever refinished by sanding to bare wood.

Your first gonna have to remove the wax. Then find out what the floor is finish is in order to find a finish that comparable to the one you already have( oil base, water base , urathane , oil, ect). Then recreen the the floor and add another finish. Darkworksite4: When the job is to small for everyone else, Its just about right for me"
