Is there a way to install deck supports without using concrete? I wish to dig down five feet, install sonotubes, put a layer of gravel in the bottom of the hole, plumb the 4×4 posts, and then pour in more gravel around the posts instead of concrete. The ground is sand throughout the job site. The location is near Canada so getting below the frost line means going deep. Will the footings remain stable with this method? Suggestions?
