I need to re-roof my house. I am researching the following topics and would appreciate any help.
1. I need a good roofing reference book
2. Information on ventilation products
3. Information on radiant heat barriers
My house does not have any type of roof overhang. Therefore, I have poor roof ventilation and am getting moisture in parts of the walls. Has anyone solved this problem before?
Part of my living room ceiling is vaulted. This part of the roof has no ventilaion. The living room is very warm in the summer and cold in the winter. Is there a way to increase the insulation or vent the roof to make the room more comfortable.
Thanks,
Chris Davis

Fred,
I am interested in knowing what is "safer, more effective and cheaper".

Chris,
Get ready. You are opening a big can of worms here. I'll
try and beat everyone to it, but just because you have no
overhang doesn't necessarily mean that is the cause of
moisture in your walls. You have a multitude of problems,
and are looking at a major reconstruction process.
Sure there's books you can buy, but you can get a pretty
good idea of which ones would serve you well at your
library, or the local bookstore.
How much experience with framing do you have? Maybe you'd
like to find a carpenter and learn it with/from him/her.
There are many schools of thought regarding the
moisture/venting/insulation/air and/or vapor barrier issue.
This is a matter of hot debate on this forum. You may want
to check through the various threads here and in the
"Energy-heating, insulating and cooling a house" subfolder
in Breaktime.
Okay, that's it for me, until more information is dispensed.
Take advice here very carefully.

Thanks for your help. I didn't think of checking the libray.
I don't have much experinence with framing, however, I am a woodworker. Are you suggesting I might need to add an overhang to my roof?
I will check out the subfolder
Thanks,

*Fred,I live in South Texas where it's not the heat it's the humidity. The mositure is not comming from the ground. It's everywhere.I think the mostiure in my walls might be due to the lack of a roof overhang. Do you have any thoughts on this?Where can I find more information on the high density cellulose? You said this stuff is a radiant heat barrier? In the summer I can feel the heat radiating from my ceiling. Thanks,Chris Davis
