Edit – Moen tech support was open and by giving them the age they said “it orginal had the 1225 and that is what they recommend”.
But I don’t always have any idea of the age and would like to know how to tell which it is without pulling the old one. For a tub/shower like this it means shutting off the house water while getting a new one.

I need to replace a Moen shower cartridge. House was build around 1993 and it is not pressure balanced.
Can’t figure out which cartridge it is.
Found a 1200 and 1225 but what is the difference.
And 98040 for Posi-temps which I think are the pressure balanced.
I have client leaving town and I need to get this fixed today or tomorrow..

Moen tech support was open and by the age and action they told me which one.I will get multiple versions, SOMETIMES, but not in this cases. These where in a sealed package could not be taken out and returned with tearing it up.Not that other don't do it. That was the other problem. Of the one version Lowes had 2 units and both had been opened and AFAIK they could have had the old parts in them. After I went to the hardware store and found 2 sealed units and compared them I could clearly see the differece which I did see at Lowes. But I still did not know what ones where which. And while the hardware store will gladly accept returns they need to get a sample of DNA and a copy of your mothers birth certificate..

I just went through this at Lowes looking for shower valve parts.
I ended up cutting open a bunch of packages in order to find what I needed.
The guy didn't know squat and said it was ok.
In the end I went to Ace and a nice young girl helped me find the parts.
The way I look at it they are supposed to get the parts I need in my hand.
If they can't do that I feel opening packages is ok.
I'd like to change the whole valve but not right now.
I'd pull the cartridge and take it to a hardware store I know that pretty much has everything; match them up.
