Hey, hey! I’m in the market for a new compressor and am looking for opinions. I do finish and trim carpentry and need a compressor for a finish gun and brad nailer. My boss has an old Bostitch pancake which is unbelievably quiet and a joy to have around. Are the new Bostitch’s just as quiet? I have heard the PC and it makes me crindge. This may seem silly but it’s a very important point to my purchase. Thanks.

An oil bath, belt driven compressor will be quiet. The new oil-less direct drives. IMO, are not quiet.
Here fishy fishy....
Sounds about right. An oil bath is not hard to find, but belt drive seems to be another issue when looking for a small one. Thanks! Is that from Burt and Ernie?
Whazzdat from Burt and Ernie???
Twin hot dog style, oil bath compressors use to come in belt drive. Electric or gas. No more???
Here fishy fishy....
We got a new high speed scroll compressor at work. That's one huge 3 phase monster! Two independant compressors on one 1200 gallon tank. Refrigerated air separater mounted in between the compressors with a condensate recovery system. The old piston compressor ran all the time, but this one just runs one compressor once in a while. Sounds like a siren or some such noise. Scares the crap out of me when it kicks on and I'm in the equipment room
The Thomas compressors are supposed to be quite a bit quieter than average.

Thomas ...
I have the st2820 ... 2hp 4 gal ... 2 2gal stacked hotdogs ...
pulls less than 15 amps ....
supposed to be one of the quietest ...
it is compared to other's I've been around.
They have quieter ... and smaller .... depends on what ya need.
Their 150 something single piston deal is pretty loud ....
plus ... mine is oil-less ....

There's another approach to the noise problem: put it far away and use a long hose.

I bought a Senco, hotdog (single) tank compressor. Is oiless. Came with an 18 guage brad nailer. Tank is rated for 125 psi. Is very lightweight and VERY quiet. When it kicks on, you can carry on a normal conversation standing right next to it while it is running. Only complaint is tank capacity is too small. Is OK for brad and finish work, but, if rapid firing, tank kicks on a lot...no good for a roof nailer...if you know what I mean. Whole set-up ( gun and compressor) was only $200. Gun is OK, but I like my 18 guage Bostich just a smidgeon more.
You are right about Porter Cable. I bought a 2hp , 4 gal pancake this summer....loud as hell!

There was an episode of Burt and Ernie pot fishing and Earnie's method was to call out,"Here fishy, fishy!". They jumped right into the boat! The things the mind retains! Still looking for the elusive quiet compressor. It's only for finish work so the Senco might work. Looking for more reviews though. Thanks guys!
This is the quietest compressor you'll never hear...it's just that the price might make you scream loudly<G>
