Cliff- I make custom racks of substance, If your looking for A solid truck rack, we make them. We call them Rhino Rax. All solid angle, aluminum if you choose, welded not bolted, with eye hooks for lashing , pegs for hanging hose , cords or whatever you choose. Clamp or bolt down. Our racks are permanent type racks. Have considered going into A fulltime business but to busy building homes at present, maybe someday. Custom built per order, you pay the freight.Average cost, $600. Step up to A Rhino! *Cliff,I think that custom may be the best way to go. I built mine myself out of welded 1-1/2" square tubing. It's rediculously overbuilt, the siderails on my truck would crush before my rack would bend at all.I built my own because I wanted more tie down points then I have seen on other racks and because I wanted the rear cross bar to be hinged to swing out of the way when I'm not using it.I even left the square tubing ends open and can slip 1" square tubing into the sides of the rack and lay a scaffold plank on these. I've used this feature a couple of times to have a platform to stand on over shrubs against a house. If you do get one custom built, I have one recommendation: get an expanded steel floor placed over the cab of your truck. I've hit mine with my ladder so many times.

Cliff, In my opinion, the best rack out there is called System One(1-800-627-9783). I've had mine for two years now and I love it. It is all aluminum, with stainless steel fasteners, which makes it very light, but it has a weight cap. of 1200 lbs. The rack has a system of accessories that make loading and hauling soooo easy! My favorite part is the ratcheting straps at each corner for load securing. The second best part is that these racks look so good I don't feel like I'm driving around a big ugly set of RACKS! They are everywhere out here in the Hamptons, where the builders can have just about anything they want so they must be good.
