My plumber is installing radiant heat with 1/2″ Pex for the bath floor. The existing sub floor is 1×4 square edge with spaces between. Should I remove the majority of the floor and install 3/4″ ply? How thick should the mud be? I am concerned with mud and tile cracking as the heat expands the work. My jobs are usually 3/4″ to 1″ above the wire. Should the Pex come in contact with the wire?

Keith,
You might want to try this question over at John Bridges Tile Forum.
How big is your bath?? Is there a tile shower? Is the radiant also going in the shower? How much hieght increase can you afford? What story of the house are you working on? Can you insulate the floor?
I have done several similar installs,,,,, they are pretty common.
Provide a little more info and you'll get a better answer either here or over at Bridges.
Best of luck, H
