They do what they say. If the grading is properly set to slope away from the house they can buy you an extra few feet to keep runoff away from the foundation, and without a drip-line in the grass/ground. In a deluge, though, they can be overwhelmed by volume of water and let some drop straight down. Ours is on a porch roof 10' from the foundation, so that's not a problem.
