Rain, Rain, Go Away (from my framing)
Hi all,
After a few weeks of nice weather, I’ve had almost two inches of rain in two days in my area, with more rain forecast for the next two days (I live in Florida)
All this moisture is playing havoc on my framing. I’m currently building a 24X25 detached garage with a finished attic space and I currently have two 8′ foot high walls up and one baloon-framed gable-end wall with the garage doors. I had tarps to cover the 8′ walls stem to stern, but when I checked them this morning, water had penetrated and swelled the edge of a piece of 1/2 sheathing and a lot of the wall was visibly wet. Also, my gable end wall has been exposed, but not completely sheathed. I’m going to try and get a tarp big enough to cover it today.
With that, here’s a couple of questions:
Should I pull of that piece of sheating and replace it? I’m a little hesitant because it’s fastened with ringshank nails 3″ on center at the edges, and 6″ on center in the middle, which makes for a lot of nails to pul. The bulged section is about 18″ along one edge of a 4X8 sheet. Is it repairable?
Secondly, what are some of the best ways to protect framing from the rain during construction? I’m building this thing alone, so unlike production framing, it doesn’t get built in a day. The tarps I have on the 8′ walls are the blue kind and only a few weeks old. They appear to have sprung leaks where they straddle the 2X6 top plate. I’m thinking some 6mil poly would work better than these crappy tarps.
Normally I wouldn’t be worried about a little rain, but with 2″ already and another 1.5″ forcast over the next two days, I’m getting worried.
Thanks in advance!
Andy
