I am converting a door to a passage way through a bearing wall of 2×6’s.
Attached is a diagram of my plan.
My question is:
Can I leave the original 79″ 2×6, and add the 2×6 spacer above it.
or do I need to remove the 79″ 2×6 and add a new whole 2×6 up to the
bottom of the lintel.
Hope I am clear.

Remove existing jack studs, raise header and replace with full length jacks to bottom of header.

Thanks for your help!!
It can be done either way but it's obvious that replacing the entire trimmer stud would be better. There are a dozen ways to skin a cat though.

I was hoping to avoid the toil of digging out the spikes to remove the stud, but will
do so if it means a stronger build.
Thanks for you input.
It might not need to be stronger but a nail puller will yank those nails in seconds so that can't be the only detterant.
Is this wide open or are you tying to finesse something here? If you are trying to finesse it, I'd just do the fillin thing unless there was some serious point load above. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
