We would like to raise the roof on our story and a half house about 2 feet. This will greatly increase the useable space upstairs (the sloping ceiling effectively eliminates floor space) and provide enough head room for much needed insulation. We will be gutting the entire upstairs and redashing the stucco exterior so the walls will be entirely accessible. I am looking for a book or some guide on how to proceed with this task.

Wow;
How big of a roof are you talking about? What is the pitch and estimated weight of the roof system? House movers are probally the people you would want to consult with. Is there access to the space for large framing members?

Depending on the size of the roof, I have done this in the past with a crane. Can be quite cost effective if everything is well coordinated and thought out in advance.
*Hire a good GC, this is way beyond books.Been there, done that, you don't want to !We usually buddy up crews when we're gonna open a roof on an occupied house.
*What type of roof , i.e. gable,hip,mansard,is there now and of what pitch?What style will the new roof be and what pitch? Is the new roof to replace the old in the exact same place? What is the basic shape of the house?And is the space now used as living space? A mansard style roof is a good way to gain needed floor space,and would look good on a tudor style house.Plus, you'll have to pay less tax to the government(only if you live in France,in the 19th century.)Are you going to attempt this yourself?What is your level of skill?
*At the very least get an engineer to look things over and if you still want to proceed have him or a registered architect draw up and sign off on plans. You are talkin' some serious structural changes here. - jb
