Anyone care to nominate range hoods to seek or avoid? Will be installed on and vented directly through an exterior wall, over a basic 30″ electric range.
Thanks,

Thanks for pointing me toward the cooking forum, but what I see over there is oohing and aahing over the latest features in hoods that cost 3 times what my range did. Just want a reasonably quiet, powerful, reliable hood, not a design statement.
Vent-A-Hood, Vent-A-Hood, and vent-A-Hood
You gotta give us your top end budget dollar amount, otherwise we cannot give real advice.

I spent about $700 on the range; would prefer to spend less than that on the hood.

Hmmm. Would you consider spending more on your range? That'd make it easier to point you to a good hood. ;-)
Another vote for Vent-a-Hood in the "nice but still reasonable in price" range.
FWIW, we spent about $25K re-doing our own kitchen. Our Vent-a-Hood has heat lamps and a warming shelf. Even tho' we sprung for pretty hi-end stuff all throughout the kitchen, DW likes those lamps more'n anything else in the place. Says she'll never have a kitchen without 'em again. Kinda like this one, but the SS goes all the way down the wall on ours:

BTW, IIRC, our Vent-a-Hood was over a grand 8 yrs. ago when we got it.

We've got the 30" stainless Broan-Nutone Allure 3 rated at 300 CFM at 4.5 sones (high) and .9 sones (low). Installation was easy, no surprises.
We're reasonably happy. Low and medium speed noise is tolerable, high speed bothers you after a while.
It's important to give it at least a 5" round duct (preferably larger).

Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
In that price range, I'd have to agree with others on the Vent-a-Hood. I've been looking at one myself.
I know that hoods seem pretty expensive nowadays, but you're not just paying for a "designer" look. With standard stainless units, the guts of the thing determines the price. Stronger, quieter, more efficient air flow is going to cost more than the whirlybird units at HD or Lowe's.
Just bought this on sale at IKEA for $450:

Very nice, quiet, made by Whirlpool- requires an 8" duct.
Thanks to all for your advice. In case it's helpful to any of you, folks from the greenbuilding listserve also suggested (1) ensuring that the hood has a reliable mechanism for preventing drafts when not in use; and (2) looking for models that permit mounting the fan on the exterior, which reduces noise. I suspect the latter option will stretch my budget beyond the comfort zone, but I'm searching.
Best,
