I need some opinions on doing a complete tearoff and re-roof during cold weather conditions. Other than the obvious problems of working in the cold, I have been told that the shingles will not “seal” properly in the cold weather and might be a problem. I have a minor leak in a valley that I can probably patch until spring, but I will have to hope it does not get worse. I am n the Washington DC area and the winter is not terrible so I dont think I will have a problem with the actual work. Any advice from the experts would be appreciated !

I would go ahead and roof it. You could always put a little dab of mastic under each shingle as you go.

*since they changed a lot of the ASTM specs after Hurricane Andrew.. the mfr's are using a more aggresive sealer... in Washington DC... I wouldn't worry about sealing due to temp.. just don't butt them too tight or they will buckle in the warm summer
*If we are talking about doing the whole roof and not just a spot repair-----I would wait until spring given the option. The work can and has been done at this time of year---but it ain't a good idea for the roof. The seal down strips are actually one of the least of your worries.Shingles get very brittle at colder temps. Forcing brittle shingles to conform to a valley may well cause damage to the shingle that will dramaticlly shorten its lifespan down the road.I have never been able to get icegaurd to adhere at colder temps.I could go on and on.Although it pains me to say it,I feel the best thing for the longterm condition of the roof is to slap patch it now and handle the whole roof properly in the spring. doesn't spring come early in DC?
