I am curious about some of the techniques you all use when re-roofing and how long you usually expect a second layer to actually last. For ex: do you remove all drip edges, cut the edges of old layers and reapply drip and felt and start again.
Do you use felt between layers?
How long will a second layer last as opposed to a first?
Any time-saving tips?
Thanks in advance.

Just curious, why are you not tearing off the old shingles? Second layer definitely won't last as long as the first.
Couldn't sell the customer on the tear-off. Customer is always right, right?
I agree with Kaufman aside from that if you leave the old on you go by the manufacture's instructions to the tee as to how to roof over an old . Doing so keeps the warranty in effect, and shingles do fail. But I would never roof over an old and if you put architectual three tab up with a 30 -50 year warrenty you will never need to refoof in your life time.
See if you can find a copy of Fine Homebuilding - April/May 2001 - #138. A very good article on exactly this subject by Stephen Hazlett.
Another day, another tool.
I do have that magazine. Thanks so much for pointing that out to me!
the installation you refer to is sometimes called nesting by the manufactors and is also accepted by them.Did you ever take the time to read the back of shingle wrapper I think you might find the correct installtion instructions right there
