I have been renovating a turn of the century cape in Vermont. I just started on the outside (the snow has finally melted). The house currently has 1″ wide board pine sheathing (12 – 24″). It is in very good shape and I think it will make better flooring. The question is should I remove the cedar clapboard and wide boards and start with new 1/2″ sheathing and 1/2″ rigid insulation then the siding? Will the 1/2″ insulation be that effective? I plan to use Hardiplank siding and the house has a lot of insulation voids. Any opinions/advice on Hardiplank over rigid insulation? Some of the advice I have been hearing has been to use 1″ rigid and skip the sheathing. This makes me feel naked. Any advice/opinions?
