re-siding & insulating log building
Hello Breaktime members,
I live in a fairly cold climate in Eastern Ontario, and as such have realized that the older log portion of our home needs re-insulating. We’ve redone interior with vapor barrier & drywall and insulated walls with pink fiberglass to R-13 value. Now I need to address exterior. Does anyone have any thoughts about my proposed approach to insulate & cover the exterior log walls with board & batten wood siding? Here’s what I have planned:
– wrap the log wall with Tyvek air barrier
– strap the exterior with 1″ x 4″ spruce
– nail 2 or 3 layers of 1″ foil backed foam in between strapping
– install board & batten
does this sound logical? or should I apply a spray on foam insulation in between strapping & forget about Tyvek air barrier? any ideas would be appreciated.

The logs are your problem. They have virtually no insulating value.. thus if a log is touching the inside and the outside of a home you have a very poorly insulated wall no matter what you do..
It's tough decision time.. how much in love with the logs are you?
thanks for your reply Frenchy. I can feel the cold radiating in from logs. the good thing is we already have complete separation inside. (2"x4" stud walls with R-13 fiberglass batts in between, sealed with vapour barrier & drywall).
And fortunately, we're only keeping one side of log cabin exposed. With regards to re-siding over rest of log cabin with board & batten wood siding. would you personally cover with Tyvek & foil faced foam before strapping for siding or would you spray foam directly on to the logs in between strapping & avoid using air barrier? finally, is it important to have an air space between foam and wood siding? cheers.
