I would get a sample and have it tested. That is as cheap as good used slate from a quarry. I would think that the stone there selling isn't as good as slate in Vermont.
$.80 a sq ft... so that is $80 a square... or, does the $.80 a sq foot mean for the raw material, then guessing you have a 33% exposure, that would push the price up to $240 a square?
Just curious - what might be a starting point for cost per sq ft or square for the labor, misc material, etc of a slate roof installation?
That is still a little cheap and would get a sample.
Matt,
If you were paying by the sq. foot then you'd get roughly 42% coverage with an 18" slate.
18" less 3" for headlap then divided in half gives 7.5 " exposure
So let me see if I understand this...
You said 43% of the material would be exposed and the material costs $.80 per gross sq foot... So, if I'm doing the math right:
43/100 = .80/x = $1.86 a sq ft or $186 a square... raw materials only. Is that right?
How much might installation, flashing, etc cost.... wild guess - maybe $1.00 a sq ft?
Yup thats really wild!
The installation would never run less than 4 to 5 hundred a sq.
Slate, stagings, flashings, fasteners, underlayment, etc., etc., etc. might run $1000 a sq. and up depending on the complexity of the roof and the difficulty of the access.
I started to give him a big "Bwahahahahaha" on the $1/sq ft, but resisted.http://grantlogan.net/
But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
Don't hold back !!!
