I recently had a chimney sweep out to clean and check out the fireplace flue before having a new set of gas logs installed. I have lived in the house 6 years and the existing logs were that lame 1930’s variety. I knew the chimney was missing a damper, apparently never had one, and was also getting an estimate on having one installed. Basically the reccomendation came back that the firebox be rebuilt, it was only 12″ deep and the minimum is 14″. He said that with the newer yellow flame log sets the fireplace has to be built like a wood burning fireplace to obtain the necessary draw, radiant heat etc. Does anyone have any recommendations on this or know of any web site having good information on new and/or re building fireplaces?
